Alterac Valley is one of the most popular battlegrounds in WoW, primarily because of the number of honor points (even in loss) that are awarded for playing there.
There are 40 players per team (Alliance vs Horde) and several NPCs that perform different roles. There are 2 ways to win the battle:
Though the player strategy is sometimes posted as a battleground message at the beginning of a battle by a helpful player, if is more often not, leaving many players new to the battleground to have to try and figure it out. This post provides the basic strategy for most players.
First, determine what group you are in. This is found above your portrait when you enter the battleground; what group you are in determines where you will go and what your role will be when the battle starts.
If you are in groups 1-5, you head directly to the Horde's Relief Hut (referred to as RH) which is located at the very opposite end of the battleground. The 1st thing to do is to take the graveyard that is there. It will take 4 minutes to capture (turn blue and have Alliance NPCs guarding it), but once the capture process begins, the Horde will not be able to resurrect there. Make sure you take a quick jaunt up to where the Horde rezzes to make sure no enemies are there hiding out. If they click on the RH flag before the 4 minute capture expires, the timer starts over. After taking the Relief Hut graveyard, help take and defend the two towers near Frostwolf Keep.
If you are in groups 6-8, you head to Iceblood Garrison and help kill Captain Galvangar. After which, you take and defend Iceblood Tower (ibt) or Tower Point (tp). These are normally easy to take against the NPC bowmen, but the Horde often backcaps so don't leave your post until the tower burns (4 minutes). Depending on how thing are going after both towers are captured, you may head directly to Frostwolf Keep to help with Drak'Thar, or help take some graveyards in the vicinity.
Important note: Never take Frostwolf Graveyard (located just outside the Frostwolf Garrison) until after the Relief Hut Graveyard is taken. Otherwise. the Horde will resurrect at the Relief Hut and make it very difficult for the Alliance to seize control of this area.
As mentioned earlier, killing Drak'Thar wins the game for the Alliance (regardless of the number of reenforcements), so after the towers and RHGY cap, there is often a call to go "all in". That means everyone attack Drak'Thar (who is pretty hard to kill). If you inadvertently get ganked by Drak or one of his guards, do not run out. Instead, go into the middle and fight till they kill you (won't take long). Because RH is capped, you simply rez and return to the battle. If you run out, you often get others killed who are setting up for the final attack. Better to get killed inside where the damage to the team is minimal instead of running out, getting others killed, and getting yourself killed anyway. If you see people saying: "Don't run out" that is what they mean.
This post is to provide the basic strategy for fighting in Alterac Valley and doesn't go in very deep on alternate strategies when things don't go according to plan (like when the Horde turtles RH). Just keep a few things in mind, and you should do ok:

- Kill the other side's general (because this is an Alliance guild, that general is Drak'Thar located at Frostwolf Keep)
- Capture sufficient resources (towers, grave yards, mines) and kill enough enemy to where the other side runs out of reinforcements before you do.

- Each tower takes 4 minutes to capture (after the opposing team clicks on the flag), and will reset when the original owning team clicks on it. When a tower burns, the opposing team loses 75 reinforcements. This goes both ways, and the Horde has a similar strategy to win, so preventing the Horde from capturing a tower is a good thing.
- Graveyards are like towers, though I don't know how many reinforcements they have. A tower must be capped before your team can rez there, so there is value in capturing these as well.
- Taking the mines also helps on the reinforcement end, as does looting enemies and turning the loot in to NPCs at Dun Baldar. After one has played at AV a few times, they are awarded a trinket that allows them to port directly to Dun Baldar from anywhere in the battleground to help facilitate this.
